Illustration shares a place with Graphic Design and Advertising Art Direction. Illustration is the profession of creative image-making for the communication of ideas and information. Creating images for magazines, videos, books and computer presentations are just a few typical examples of illustration job assignments.

Commercial illustrations are visual designs meant to provoke an emotional response and thus hold a consumer's attention long enough to textually or through dialogue dexcribe a product or make a statement. Illustrations are commonly created with traditional & computer aided techniques and include; drawings, paintings, photography, photo manipualtion and other works of art that are created by a freelance artist or design firm.

Technical illustrations visually communicate, through a diagram, an object, or a concept. Technical illustrations generally have to describe and explain the subject matter to a nontechnical audience. Therefore the visual image should be accurate in terms of dimensions and proportions, and should provide "an overall impression of what an object is or does, to enhance the viewer’s interest and understanding.
